Great Divide Bikepacking Fundraiser -  June 2023

GDMBR Route NOBO.jpg

Starting on June 17th, Johann will start the ca.1400-mile leg of a solo bike-pack along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) from the Mexican Border through New Mexico and Colorado to Wamsutter, Wyoming. Last year I successfully did the first leg from Banff, Canada to Wamsutter. To avoid mud season in New Mexico and allow maximum time for the snow to melt in high passes in Colorado, I'm starting from the south this year and will head north to the spot in Wyoming where I finished last year. (Total GDMBR from Banff to Mexico comprises 2750 miles / 4450 km of distance with over 200,000 ft / 60,000 m of uphill climbing).

This endeavor is a challenge, and also, a fundraiser for a very worthy cause, the Zambian Carnivore Programme. 100% of your donations will go directly to ZCP to support their conservation efforts. With your generous help, we raised $7,450 last year, that was generously matched by African Bush Camps. Generated funds for ZCP that were used to purchase uniforms for some of their field team members, purchase and deploy a lion GPS/Sat collar and also to set up two tents for remote field work in Kafue National Park. Your contributions made a real conservation difference!! Please see a FULL REPORT of where the money raised in 2022 went.

GOFUNDME link: Every bit helps. Please feel free to share with friends, on social, with clients who love Africa, etc.

As a registered 501c3 in the USA, donations are tax deductible!

About Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP):
ZCP is a registered 501c3 non-profit focusing on conserving large carnivores and the ecosystems they reside in through science, action on the ground and local leadership. Effective Conservation Science relies on accurate and current data to guide and inform management actions. Consequently, research and monitoring play a fundamental role and ZCP is 100% field-based, with a full-time year-round research presence in their study sites. Conservation Action includes human-wildlife conflicts, bushmeat and anti-snaring, poaching, disease mitigation and improving large landscape connectivity. For conservation to be successful, local communities have to be effectively involved and Conservation Capacity therefore centers around Conservation Clubs, Citizen Science, Community Conservation, empowering Women in Wildlife Conservation and training the next generation of Conservation Biologists and Veterinarians. 100% of your donation will go directly to ZCP to support their conservation efforts

About Great Divide Mountain Bike Route:

Considered the longest off-pavement route in the world, the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is North America's premier off-pavement cycling route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide 32 times in southern Canada and the USA. This route is defined by the word "remote". Its remoteness equates with spectacular terrain and scenery. The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 ft / 60,000 m of elevation gain.

We have been overwhelmed with gratitude by the support you have shown us in our fundraising efforts for Africa.

We will post updates on social:  (Johann: Facebook / Instagram)

Special thanks to Dutchy's Sausages of Ft. Lauderdale for providing some of the best Droewors in North America to fuel the ride!

(they also have amazing biltong, boerewors and a restaurant if you're in the area, or you can order online)
